How to get the bus from Hanoi Airport to the the Old City and Hoan Kiem Lake.
Hanoi Airport (Noi Bai International Airport) is about 27 km from the city centre, and the cheapest way to travel to and from the airport is by local bus.
Bus 84 departs from the international and domestic terminal and terminates at Hanoi Railway Station. Bus 84 goes via the Old City and Hoan Kiem Lake, which is the best area to stay in Hanoi for visitors.
The bus takes about 1 hour, depending on traffic.

Hanoi Airport Bus ticket price
The ticket price for Bus 84 from Hanoi airport is 45,000 VND (November 2023).
Tickets are bought on the bus with cash. The ticket seller has a wad of cash so you should be ok if you only have 500,000 VND fresh from the ATM. I saw the ticket seller break a 500,000 without asking for smaller change.

I usually get the bus from the airport, and seating space has varied every time. Some trips there have been spare seats available, while other trips have been standing-room only.
The bus starts at the international terminal and then goes to the domestic terminal. Sometimes the seats are already taken by the time the bus gets to the domestic terminal. There is a section in the bus for luggage.

The first bus departs Hanoi Station at 5.30 and the last bus is at 8.30.

Hanoi Airport Bus route
When exiting the airport, follow the bus signs to get to the bus stop. There are several local buses that serve the airport, so look for Bus 84 if you want to go to the Hoan Kiem Lake area.
The bus has a few stops along the way, including:
– Tay Ho (West Lake) – Corner of Au Co and Xuan Dieu
– Long Bien Bus Interchange
– Hanoi Central Post Office
– Melia Hotel
– Ga Ha Noi (Hanoi Railway Station).
The area around Hoan Kiem Lake is turned into a pedestrian area on the weekend, so the pus goes via the Opera House instead of the post office.
The bus also makes stops in the Hoan Kiem area that aren’t listed on the official stops. The best thing to do is preload your hotel in your online map and get off nearest to your hotel. Show the hotel to the ticket seller and they may inform you when to get off.
