Communities in western North Carolina are still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene. If you’re looking for another way to help those in need, drop 10 bucks on “Cardinals at the Window,” a new 136-track compilation featuring an amazing array of artists, including heavy hitters like Phish, Drive-By Truckers, and R.E.M.
The deep collection of previously unreleased tunes can be purchased for download at Bandcamp, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit relief and recovery in WNC.
The track list has something for all tastes. There are live cuts from Jason Isbell, the Avett Brothers, Jeff Tweedy, Tune-Yards, the Decemberists, the War on Drugs, and the Hold Steady, and the comp is populated with a plentiful amount of North Carolina artists, including Sylvan Esso, MJ Lenderman, the Mountain Goats, and Wye Oak.
The effort was partially organized by North Carolina musician Libby Rodenbough, a Madison County resident who performs with Mipso and the Dead Tongues. She was on tour out of state with the latter when the storm hit her home region.
“There were just so many folks who, like us, had witnessed the destruction of these holy places from the outside and felt their hearts trying to break out of their chests,” Rodenbough said in a statement. “It was instant, the way people signed on. They also feel what I feel, that these mountains are the cradle of some deep and ineffable magic.”
