Gay Friendly Key West: Ocean Key Resort + Spa
I had been wanting to stay at Ocean Key Resort and Spa for a while, so I was excited when I got the chance to visit this beautiful property in June. Ocean Key Resort is Key West’s top luxury getaway, and it’s easy to see why.
The resort is located at Zero Duval Street, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, and provides ocean views from every room. Its location is adjacent to Mallory Square in historic Old Town Key West.
When Kim and I arrived, a friendly valet/carhop greeted us and helped us check in. He then escorted us to our room. I was filled with excitement, eagerly anticipating the first glimpse of our ocean view boutique suite, and it was truly stunning.
The room perfectly captured the essence of Key West with its colorful, tropical, and modern design.
Our balcony offered amazing views of the Gulf of Mexico, the pool area, and Mallory Square. As I leaned against the balcony rail, I could hear Cuban music playing from El Meson de Pepe across the way, and it brought a big smile to my face.
Inside the room, there was a beautiful hand-painted minibar, a queen sleeper sofa, a king-sized bed, a gorgeous stone bathroom, and a jetted tub.
We also received some wonderful welcome gifts.

The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast in our room while taking in the tranquil gulf view and listening to the morning roosters.
We ordered their delicious Toasted Coconut-Key Lime Breakfast Bread, along with their freshly baked pastry selection, and seasonal fruits and berries.
After breakfast, we headed to LIQUID Pool Bar & Lounge. Since it was early, the pool area was quiet, making us feel like it was all ours.
We relaxed in one of their chic cabanas and later learned that guests can order food and drinks via the cocktail bar located right next to the pool.
After spending the morning at the pool, we freshened up and ventured out to explore the island.
There is just so much to do in Key West!

When we returned, we decided to have dinner delivered to our room since we were both a bit worn out from the heat.
The resort’s signature restaurant, Hot Tin Roof, offers beautiful ocean views and features Cuban and Caribbean cuisine aspects, local seafood, and seasonal produce.
We decided to indulge and ordered quite a few items from their menu. For starters, we had their Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad, Crispy Brussels Sprouts, and Lobster Bisque.
For our main entrees, we enjoyed their Seared Scallops and Petit Filet Mignon.
To top it off, we ordered a slice of their Key Lime Pie, Coconut Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Cuban Bread Pudding, and Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée for dessert. The food was an experience in itself, and everything was delicious.

After dinner was finished it was now time to watch the sunset.
It’s true what they say about the sunset in Key West. It’s unlike anywhere else. Watching it from the balcony at Ocean Key felt like a dream come true.
I don’t know what was more beautiful: the setting sun or the numerous sailboats drifting by at just the right time.
While watching the beautiful sights, I couldn’t help but think what a great location Ocean Key Resort would be for a wedding or event.
Unfortunately, the night soon passed, and before we knew it, checkout time had come.
Before doing so we made sure to stop at The Madda Fella Store, located inside the resort.
Also, if we had more time we would have visited the resort’s onsite spa, SpaTerre.
The resort’s website describes it as — A serene hideaway where you will enjoy tropical treatments designed to leave your skin feeling soft, supple, and glowing. The spa is designed to help you disconnect from the outside world and reconnect your mind, body, and soul. Their aromatherapy will help you to un-plug and be present in this island paradise. The Tropical Essence Massage and Coconut Crush Body Renewal are favorites of the resort’s guests, visitors, and local clientele. Relax and unwind before or after any of our spa experiences with a ritual bath. Sink into a traditional Japanese soaking tub infused with aromatherapy essence. An opulent experience to be sure and pampering that you deserve.

Also, next time, we’ll be sure to visit the popular Sunset Pier, which offers stunning views, tropical cuisine, and live music, as well as the best spot in town for the resort’s sunset celebration.
There’s something special about the locals in Key West – at least the ones I’ve met. They exude happiness and pride, and you can tell they love where they’re from and what they do.
Most of them talk about their off-work activities, like sailing, fishing, or playing in a band. Every time I visit Key West, a part of me wants to stay there forever. This feeling was especially strong this time as I chatted with the staff at Ocean Key and felt their joy and enthusiasm for the resort and Key West.
Ocean Key Resort + Spa is a truly gay-welcoming resort located in a truly welcoming gay-friendly destination (learn more about gay Key West HERE).
The staff took great care of Kim and I and we felt comfortable during our short, but wonderful stay.
It was all perfection.
Thank you, Ocean Key Resort and Spa, for an unforgettable experience.
