As more and more Americans embrace electric vehicles (EVs), a number of rental car companies are doing the same.

Hertz and Avis are moving rapidly to dramatically increase the size of its EV fleet, and rental customers are requesting EVs more these days, mostly because it gives them an opportunity to test drive the cars.

But the new technology comes with two challenges. Before renting the car, you need to know the EV’s driving range, and in winter, the power of the battery as well as the range is diminished by cold weather.

And number two, know the whereabouts of charging stations along your route. Apps like PlugShare, Chargeway and Better Route Planner can help.
