The United Nations World Tourism Organization has announced its list of the 54 best tourism villages of 2023.
The villages are considered based on their cultural and natural resources, conservation and sustainability, tourism development, and infrastructure.
The country with the most number of “best villages” is Peru with five including the remote mountain villages of Chacas, Chavín de Huántar, Paucartambo, Pozuzo, and Lake Titicaca’s Taquile.
Europe has 12 great villages spread over 12 countries.
Japan has three great villages on the island of Honshu.
And then, there’s the Lephis village in Ethiopia — Africa’s lone entry.
