Few words can so quickly elicit the image of surfboard-wielding, wavy haired beach dwellers than ‘Bondi’. Here is all you need to know about riding the waves of Sydney’s most iconic surfing suburb.

On the southern side of Sydney’s iconic harbour lies a jagged and shapely coastline that weaves its way alongside a series of desirable neighbourhoods defined by their golden beaches. Of all those beaches, none are quite as evocative of the Australian approach to life than Bondi.

This beachside suburb is most famous for its namesake beach, which for decades has attracted countless sunbathers, swimmers and, of course, surfers. The whole Bondi neighbourhood has practically been built around the magnetic pull of this famous stretch of sand, meaning that the whole area has a wonderful seaside spirit, symbolised by laid-back surf shops, trendy cafes and scantily-clad locals.

It’s an ambience that suits the surf community down to the board – indeed it is a vibe partly generated by them – and it’s no surprise that Bondi Beach sits atop many a surfer’s bucket list. This place’s name even originates from the Aboriginal word ‘Boondi’, which essentially translates to ‘surf’. But what can you expect once you finally reach the promised land of swells and breaks? Well, let’s take a look.

Bondi Beach

It’s the headline act and the epicenter of surfing in Bondi, if not Sydney itself. The beach itself is about 1km (0.6mi) long, with a fairly deep curvature and two well-defined points jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. This means that, as well as a glorious sandy beach that welcomes thousands of tourists during peak season, you also get a patch of calm waters perfect for swimming and beginner surfing, as well as two breaks that generate the real waves a little further out.

Its geographical position also means that it’s one of Sydney’s most consistent wavey beaches, particularly on the south side. There’s good exposure and the wind wraps around perfectly, so when other beaches are flat, Bondi still has waves to ride. Equally, when other beaches are battered by onshore winds, Bondi remains largely well protected.

The north side of the beach is the most beginner-friendly, with good clean waves that are gentle enough to cater to all levels. The south side certainly gets choppier, so this is where the seasoned surfers tend to ride, although it is important to be aware of the powerful rip current, nicknamed Backpackers’ Rip thanks to the naivety of many a tourist surfer over the years.

The one thing worth noting about visiting Bondi is that this place gets crazy busy during the peaks of summer, both on the sand and out in the water. If you love the buzz then that’s great – the bustling economy here means that there are loads of good surf shops and schools, too – but if you’re not so keen on the masses, consider visiting at a different time of year. There are decent (if not variable) surf conditions all year here, as well temperate water 365 days a year. It’s also worth checking out the other beaches nearby. Head south and you’ll find Tamarama Beach, Bronte Beach and Coogee Beach.

Over two millions visitors a year are estimated to feel the warm sand of Bondi Beach between their toes

Surfing Lessons in Bondi

Whether you’re new to Australia or even surfing as a whole, taking a lesson or two is a great way to get stuck into the Sydney swells. Spending time with a certified instructor will fast-track your skill level in ways you wouldn’t believe, and those core techniques learnt early on will stick with you throughout your surfing career. Instructors also tend to be super friendly, passionate and knowledgeable about the area, so they can offer great insight into the wider cultural scene as well as the surf community.

Book a more expensive private lesson if you want maximum improvement, but more affordable group sessions are also great, particularly if you’re keen to meet like-minded enthusiasts at a similar skill level. There are several excellent surf schools all over Sydney but, as you can imagine, with such popularity comes the odd chancer, so be wary of who you book a lesson with. Always go certified and, if you want to learn on Bondi, the only officially licensed surf school is Let’s Go Surfing. These guys are super experienced and well run, with a variety of class options ranging in age, skill and cost.

Surf Shops and Rentals in Bondi

As a thriving surf neighbourhood, Bondi is also home to several surf shops, mostly managed by passionate surfers with a love for their local beach and an enthusiasm for helping others make the most of it. If you’re new to surfing, or a seasoned wave rider new to Sydney, then you’ll want to hit up one of these stores to grab a board and some gear. You can easily rent a board if buying isn’t an option, and the staff in a good shop will be super helpful when it comes to picking the right one for you.

Wetsuits aren’t essential in Sydney’s temperate waters, but they do come recommended for newcomers in particular, while further accessories like fins and leashes can also be bought, not to mention an array of surf fashion items, so you can look the part on the beach.

Bondi, as well as wider Sydney, is not short on independent and chain surf shops. We recommend popping into Surf Culture and the extremely charming Sunburnt Mess for all your surfing needs.

What else is there to do in Bondi?

If (on rare occasions) the waves are flat, or if you’re simply looking to shake up your routine a bit, there is plenty to do in and around Bondi itself. Beyond beach and water activities – not forgetting the man made saltwater pool overlooking the ocean – you’ll find a range of boutique shops, trendy cafes, lively bars and great seafood restaurants near the beachfront. There are cultural offerings near the beach at Bondi Pavillion and Aboriginal rock engravings up in North Bondi. If there’s one thing you do, however, we suggest following the Bondi to Coogee walking trail – truly one of the world’s most scenic coastal paths.

Staying in Bondi

There are a load of great places to stay in Bondi. Whether you’re after beachfront hotels, quaint boutique properties or private rentals, there are lots of charming accommodations that place you close to the action. Remember that you will be paying a premium for the desirable location, so do consider staying somewhere else in Sydney and using the city’s efficient public transport system if you’re looking to save the pennies.
