Amongst the most coveted short haul destinations, the Spanish islands have long been attracting large numbers of sun seekers from all around Europe. Blame it on their wonderful weather, long sandy beaches or azure blue waters, holidays in the Canary Islands and the Balearics are here to stay. However, both archipelagos are different and each one unique so which one to choose? Should you go on holidays to Majorca or holidays to Tenerife? Did the chicken lay the egg or the opposite? Those questions tend to take up quite a bit of our time when deciding where to head to for some fun under the sun so we have decided to put some things into perspective in order to help you choose.
Beaches
Canary Islands: Life’s a beach and this is apparent in both destinations. From lazing on one of the charred volcanic beaches during your holidays in Lanzarote to exploring the sand dunes of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands provide a spectacular collection of sandy and volcanic stretches of land to lay your towel and enjoy the sunshine.
Balearic Islands: The historic and impressively cosy Mediterranean islands also have their share of phenomenally beautiful seaside sceneries. From all night partying on the beach of San Antonio in Ibiza to enjoying one of the natural gems of Majorca and Formentera, the Balearic Islands have it all! Golden sand, shingle and rock are well represented on a holiday to Majorca and even if that is not your thing you can still relax by one of Ibiza’s famous beach bars.
Activities
Canary Islands: Watersports fans rejoice! The wild waters of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the islands play host to some of the best settings for practicing your skills and topping up on some adrenaline. Windsurf or surf around Fuerteventura or go on a full on diving expedition during your holidays in Tenerife, it’s all up to you!
Balearic Islands: Same rules apply for the Balearic Islands but with a bit less wind and more history. Visit the castles and historical sights of Majorca or go on a holiday to Ibiza and fly like a spaceman over water on a flyboard. The traditional banana boats, kayaking and pedalos are also up for a ride so what you choose to do depends on your preference and pocket.
Nightlife
Canary Islands: As with most holidays, a bit of clubbing is always on the list and the Canary Islands never fail to make you move. From the bars, clubs and fancy restaurants in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote to the wild gay parties and bars in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, you will certainly find something to tickle your fancy. Spend your holidays in Fuerteventura gazing down the endless blue while enjoying a cocktail or party up in Tenerife. The options are indeed endless.
Balearic Islands: Definitely no introduction is needed for the party isles of the Mediterranean. Holidays to Ibiza without clubbing could be easily considered sacrilegious and Magaluf in Majorca is infamous for the same reasons. Nonetheless, not all people like sweaty nightclubs and groovy basslines so for the more laidback amongst us, a huge selection of beach bars, pubs and restaurants cater for those who prefer enjoying rather than sleeping their night away.
